How do I remove the timeline feature in Google Earth?
1. Go to ‘View → Show Time’ and click on ‘Never’.
Why should I use the timeline feature?
The timeline feature is useful for 2 reasons:
- You want to view an entire set of vehicles’ history all at once, as a movie
- You want to view the data during a small time window from within a history (either one or multiple vehicles)
Both are illustrated below:
For the best use of the time slider for displaying your vehicles’ activity as a movie, set the settings as such below, and press the play buttton. The pins will drive around the map, following their full-day paths (which are multi-colored randomly).
You can use the time slider as shown below in order to show just a particular part of the day (e.g. a complaint about a speeding truck at noon in a particular area would be easy to investigate pulling up just that time of day using the time slider):
The time slider can be “opened” up by clicking and dragging one side or the other in either direction. Then the entire slider can be “dragged” left or right in order to move through time and move to the time in question.
If all of the sudden, you select some other area of Google Earth and all the points for the day suddenly appear, you should select the history folder, or deselect “Restrict time to currently selected folder” on the Google Time Slider options.
If all of the sudden your movie mode moves WAY too fast through more than just the day or range of dates you selected, you should turn “Restrict time to currently selected folder” back on or deselect any other time-based folders which are being viewed.
The “Restrict time to currently selected folder” option, when turned on, puts the time slider ONLY in the context of what is selected (if it’s a single folder or point, then everything else which is turned on within Google Earth in Places or Temporary Places is displayed simultaneously, without respect to the time slider). If it is turned OFF, then the first/last times displayed in the time slider are the first/last times of ANY time-based folders (e.g. vehicle history reports) which are currently open and displayed within Google Earth. Since it takes a fixed amount of time to “play” through the time slider, regardless of how much time is to be displayed, movies look best when only the time the vehicles are moving is displayed in the time slider. When displaying movies, you generally want the box checked. When drilling down on particular areas of your vehicle’s history, it sometimes makes sense to change the box selection on the fly to avoid turning on every single “pin” you have open at the moment.
It takes some experience to determine when to choose these options, depending on what you are trying to achieve.
